Yet Another 3D printer from Scrap

1-16-15 Post

More spinning motors (Thermistor)
Three of the four motors spin when driven by the test software as in post 1-5-15. However they would only go back to "Home" wen driven using Repetier on Marlin. a 100K Ohm resistor across T0 (temperature sensor) fixed this. I'm sure the real thermistor will do the same thing when I get that far. I am still having issues with the extruder motor, but I have a different extruder motor on the way for other reasons so I am not too worried about that issue.

Extruder feeder woes:
The bottom line here is, I bought the wrong one. I did update the 'Obtaining parts' 1-30-14 post to warn others. The feeder I bought is made for a Replicator 2X extruder and cannot accept the Bowden tube. Lesson learned, it's only money and time, right? This is what I ended up buying this time. It does have a motor. My ewaste content is going down, but hey, now I just want to print.

Frame:
Well, I got started. This is taking more time than I expected. One downside of using salvaged parts is parts are not always consistent. You work with what ya got.
I downloaded the author's drawings, converted them to Corel Draw and made a 1st draft of resizing them. I then took the CDROM sleds and measured the distance between holes with a micrometer and used those measurements to move the holes in the Corel Draw document. I printed the "Boards" on paper and tried a test fit to the CDROM sleds. After a few iterations, and adding cutouts for motors and other protrusions, I seem to have a good fit. I do see an advantage to using CDROMs of the same make/model for all axis so you can reuse these measurements. Now I just need it to get warm enough to run my laser saw!

Mount Hot End:
I'm not quite sure how I will go about mounting the hot end on the Z axis just yet. The instructable really didn't address it. Maybe I can work on it over the long weekend coming up. I am however, already concerned about the weight of the Z axis. How much can a CDROM stepper lift straight up?

Endstops:
Here is another project to start. I have salvaged a number of optical switches from old printers. There are a few sources of information such as this one just google around. I'll add my own when I have settled on a design. The author of the instructable I am following did not use endstops anyway, so I should get away without them for a while. I may save that for the end of the project.

Personal hacking note:
The Pololu stepper driver and the CDROM / DVDROM stepper/sled seem to make a good combination. I have lots of CDROMs. I can see using this in many future projects. How 'bout a matchbox car power garage door opener?
